FAQ
Impostor Game questions
Short answers to the questions people ask before they pass a phone around. The how to play guide and the rules go further.
Can we play the impostor game online without downloading it?
Yes. Open the play page in a phone browser, add your group, and play on that one device. You do not install an app or create an account.
Is it free?
The browser game is free, including every word category. There is nothing to buy on this website.
Is this a free impostor game for an evening with friends?
Yes. Friends share one phone, give spoken clues, and vote. Rounds are short, so it fits an evening. Nothing to download and no account.
How many players can join?
At least three. There is no hard cap. The first 16 players each get a different portrait. Extra players may repeat a portrait.
How many impostors should we use?
The suggestion is 1 for 3–6 players, 2 for 7–9, and 3 for larger groups. Fewer impostors make the round quieter. You can change the number on the settings screen.
Does the impostor know the word?
No. Regular players see one shared word. The impostor only learns that they are the impostor.
How do the clues work?
Players speak in turn. Someone who knows the word starts. A clue should point at the word without saying it. The in-app example is Park: trees, green, relax, and walk fit. Car, computer, and phone do not. The impostor listens and tries to sound sure. A spoken guess is not scored. The vote decides the round.
Can the impostor win by saying the word?
The game does not score a spoken guess. Impostors try to work out the word so their hints sound real. The round ends when the group votes. If the vote lands on a player who knew the word, the impostors win.
What happens if we refresh the page?
Names and settings can come back. Secret roles and the current word are not saved. Refreshing during a round clears them so they are not left in the browser.
Which languages are included?
English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, and Polish. The words and the game screens use the same translations as the iOS app. Switch language from the menu. A round in progress stays on the screen.
What does the iPhone app add?
It is the original version of this party game, installed on your home screen and usable offline. This site does not block the browser game or ask you to install it.
